John McLean Harrington published 302 handwritten newspapers between 1858 and 1869 in Harnett County, N.C., the greatest collection of handwritten newspapers anywhere at any time in the United States. A postmaster by day, a journalist by night, Harrington demonstrates the resourcefulness of a quick mind during the grim days before, during and after the Civil War.
